Sustainability
We all have an impact on
the environment and our community!
Now let's talk less about change and instead, make it happen...
As a software company,
we want to be especially aware of ours.
We strive to impact the environment, the economy, and society positively!
To do so, we orient our sustainability measures in line with the 17 goals for sustainable development of the
United Nations, giving us a clear guideline and the roadmap of which path to take.
No poverty
End poverty in all its forms, everywhere.
Achieving this goal includes finding solutions to new threats caused by climate change and conflict.
SDG 1 focuses not just on people living in poverty, but also on the services people rely on and social policy that either promotes or prevents poverty.
At DALIM, our roots are in Germany, and our headquarters and most of our employees are based there. So we asked ourselves how we could deal with this urgent matter while being proactive. The solution for us was to integrate jobs in different parts of the world and therefore give everybody opportunities. We started this journey by hiring directly in Brazil.
Zero hunger
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
SDG 2 highlights the complex inter-linkages between food security, nutrition, rural transformation and sustainable agriculture. According to the United Nations, there are around 690 million people who are hungry, which accounts for 10 percent of the world population.
Hunger is everywhere globally, and also in Germany and France, right at our doorstep. We plan to engage with local food banks by volunteering and building a connection in the future.
Good health and well-being
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Good health is essential to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda. It focuses on broader economic and social inequalities, urbanization, climate crisis, continuing burden of HIV and other infectious diseases, not forgetting emerging challenges such as non-communicable diseases.
Our goal is to give all our employees the possibility to live a healthy and balanced life. As an employer we offer employees the possibility to lease (electric) bikes, to make their commuting more active. We equipped our offices with standing desks, and we get fresh organic fruits delivered every week from the local bio market.
Quality education
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
SDG 4 aims to provide children and young people with quality and easily accessible education plus other learning opportunities. One of its targets is to achieve universal literacy and numeracy.
Education is a never-ending story. As a company, we are aware of this. This is why we partner with schools and universities, to welcome many inters in our offices all year round. Furthermore, we are in the process of setting up a green committee to take sustainability out of its vacuum and make as many people collaborate as possible. Currently, we employ four dual students full-time, allowing them to get their master’s diploma, all while gaining work experience.
Gender equality
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
SDG 5 aims to grant women and girls equal rights and opportunities to live freely without discrimination, including workplace discrimination, while also opposing any forms of violence.
We aim to make our company more equal, and this goal goes hand in hand with quality education. We want to allow interns of all genders to get to know the IT world. Furthermore, we aim to collaborate with the German event “Girls Day“, opening our doors to young girls on a middle school level and enabling them to get their first experience in a software company at a young age.
Clean water and sanitation
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
SDG 6 is closely linked with other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For example, progress in SDG 6 will improve health (SDG 3) and improve school attendance, both of which contribute to alleviating poverty.
As a software company, our products are not tangible and don’t use raw materials of different types. This is why our impact on this goal stays limited to our own water consumption within the company. Here we were able to eliminate all plastic bottles and install water fountains in the offices.
Affordable and clean energy
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
Access to energy is a very important pillar for the well-being of people, as well as economic development and poverty alleviation.
Energy is the primary resource we consume to manufacture our software solutions, which is why we have powered our operations with hydroelectricity since 2014.
This allowed us to save over 1.000 tons of CO2e. Our ambition is to go even further and install solar panels on our headquarters' roof. Furthermore, in 2021 we decided to power our heating using biogas, which saves around 60 tons of CO2e per year.
Decent work and economic growth
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
This goal aims to ensure that every country's economic sector provides the necessary requirements for its citizens to have a good life irrespective of their background, race or culture.
This goal reunites our ambitions of goals 1 and 3, enabling all our employees to have a decent and good life, from Kehl to São Paulo.
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.
Beyond offsetting actions, the real long-term differentiation that we can make can only come from our business as a software developer by reducing our carbon footprint a) during the manufacturing of our products by our teams and b) during their use by our customers. "Manufacturing" is understood in the broadest sense of the word as the development of products and their sale, maintenance, and administrative tasks. This "manufacturing" carbon footprint comes mainly from the energy we consume, the hardware and software we use, and our teams' travel. In the end, it corresponds to a typical "office" activity; our room for manoeuvre for reduction remains limited and is not likely to differentiate us from other companies. The most significant gain is undoubted to be imagined in the use that our customers make of our products because the latter is implemented by a large and growing number of users, and therefore the slightest gain is multiplied massively.
Reduced inequality
Reduce inequality within and among countries.
This goal, known as "shared prosperity", complements SDG 1, the eradication of extreme poverty, and is relevant for all countries worldwide.
To reduce inequalities, we partner with many local associations that welcome people from various nationalities and backgrounds in their teams. We are proud sponsors of the women’s handball team of the CS Reichstett and the football and basketball teams of the FV Kehl.
Sustainable cities and communities
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
The targets of SDG 11 include investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and improving urban planning and management in participatory and inclusive ways.
Making our immediate environment more sustainable is a big goal. For us, this means enabling employees to make their commuting greener and preferably two-wheel (bike and electric motorcycle). We plan to transform our headquarters into a Green Building, helping us save on energy consumption and clean the air around the offices. Furthermore, we are a proud sponsor of the zero waste store “Das LoLo“ in Kehl. We also allow them to use our company fleet for their logistics, and this way, they don’t need to buy their own vehicles.
Responsible consumption and production
To ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
The targets of Goal 12 include using eco-friendly production methods and reducing the amount of waste. By 2030, national recycling rates should increase, as measured in tons of material recycled. Furthermore, companies should adopt sustainable practices and publish sustainability reports.
We manufacture our products using high-tech devices, which all impact the environment and have social implications. We already power them using renewable energy; the next step is to use them as long as possible and repair them. Additionally, we try to consume more responsible products within our headquarters. From organic foods and water out of glass bottles to, hopefully soon, zero-waste organic snacks.
Climate action
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy.
SDG 13 and SDG 7 on clean energy are closely related and complementary. The leading sources of greenhouse gas savings that countries need to focus on in order to realize their commitments under the Paris Agreement are switching fuels to renewable energy and enhancing end-use energy efficiency.
To take action on climate change, one must first understand its impact. That’s why we calculated the footprint of our yearly operations. Only now can we take educated action steps, knowing the significant contributors to our footprint and reducing it. Everything we can’t reduce, we will offset to be carbon-negative. And to really be carbon-negative, we want to offset all emissions since the foundation of DALIM SOFTWARE in 2000.
Life below water
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
Reduce marine pollution; protect and restore ecosystems; reduce ocean acidification; sustainable fishing; conserve coastal and marine areas; end subsidies contributing to overfishing; increase the economic benefits from the sustainable use of marine resources.
Our operations don’t impact marine wildlife directly, so our actions stay limited. As already mentioned, we reduced our plastic consumption within the headquarters and pay particular attention when ordering goodies and merchandising to ensure the most negligible impact possible.
Life on land
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
This goal aims at securing sustainable livelihoods that will be enjoyed for generations to come. The human diet comprises 80% of plant life, making agriculture a very important economic resource.
To promote biodiversity and offset our emissions, we will try to engage locally and help bring back wildlife close to our roots. For this, we will try to engage in projects in the Black Forest and in Alsace.
Peace, justice and strong institutions
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
Reducing violent crime, sex trafficking, forced labour, and child abuse are clear global goals. The International Community values peace and justice and calls for stronger judicial systems that will enforce laws and work toward a more peaceful and just society.
Our software can help any institution become more efficient, and supporting “good “institutions become more efficient therefore multiplies our impact. We are currently thinking about how to make several institutions have access to our software more easily.
Partnership for the goals
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
SDG 17 refers to the need for cross-sector and cross-country collaboration in pursuit of all the goals by the year 2030.
As a software provider, we enable our partners to be more efficient. Enabling sustainable companies to be more efficient will multiply our impact. This is our primary focus, as colossal leverage lies in this dynamic.
We believe sustainability can only be honest
if it is merged with transparency.
